Have you ever heard the saying that if you want something you need to put it out to the universe? Is that a saying outside of Boulder? Did I just make that up and it is not a saying at all? Do you even know what I’m talking about?
Right now you are thinking, oh she is one of those. She is “sending vibes out to the universe.” She must be one of those people who call themselves “spiritual” but not “religious.” She must drink hemp milk, listen to Phish and use that freaky crystal deodorant instead of Secret®.
But that is not what I mean. Well, it is not entirely what I mean. (I have been to a couple Phish shows but that is totally unrelated.)
Here is the thing: a couple of years ago, when people asked how my job was going I would say, “Oh, the job is fine. But what I really want is to find a part-time job that pays really well and allows me to be home with the kids more.” And I said this every time I got the chance.
Can you guess what happened?
Out of the blue, the phone rang one evening when I was driving home from work totally exhausted, having missed dinner with the kids and facing a night of working on the laptop. An old boss offered me a part-time gig that would pay me more than I was making busting my ass full time. Yep, I asked and the universe answered. So I learned the lesson first hand: You gotta put it out there.
Cut to less than a year later and I left the part-time job to go back to the previous full-time job, this time with a better title and more money–but still making less than at the 24 hours/ week job. Seriously. How is that possible? And am I crazy?
Well, that’s obvious.
No need to get into the details of the hows, whys, whens and WTFs. But it is now time to put it out there to the universe again.
Dear Universe,
I am due. I didn’t win the Mega Millions despite buying 10 tickets! I didn’t even win a $10 grocery gift card from the office’s raffle at last month’s biometric screening.
Didn’t you know I was due for something good to happen? I have helped clients, friends and random acquaintances land sweet gigs, raises, promotions and other kick ass employment deals.
I am raising three incredibly wonderful boys who pay attention in school and are mostly nice to other kids. Big F has turned in his homework on time all year for Pete’s sake!
I deserve something cool to land in my lap. Soon.
This shiny, new opportunity that comes my way should be awesome and exactly what I need. You are the universe; you know what that is better than I do. Please send it right away. Tomorrow would be good.
Thank you in advance,
Katie
