The One Where I Feel Like An Old Lady

Today I’m channeling Milton Berle–no, not Milton Berle. Who was the actor who voiced Templeton the Rat in Charlotte’s Web? Hold on, let me Google….Paul Lynde! He was also the father in Bye Bye Birdie and sang that song about “Kids.” If he were alive today he would be awesome as Cam’s closeted father on Modern Family. Who cast that guy as a heterosexual “father knows best” type? Silliness.

Anyway…today I’m not talking about my kids because, while they are not perfect (have I told you how much they are fighting and yelling and driving me absolutely crazy lately?), they are too young and adorable to be the kids I’m talking about.

A while ago one of my friend’s daughters befriended me on Facebook and either she forgot or she doesn’t care but I see some crazy stuff on there. She is in 8th grade (I think) and there is nothing particularly scandalous, because if there was I would un-friend her to remove myself from the awkward voyeurism.

No, it is not scandalous, just kind of surprising for the mom of  6, 4, and 3 year old boys. And with Facebook’s new format I don’t really see her updates too much anymore. But when I did I was always amazed.

The clothes!

The hairstyles!

The make-up!

The relationship status changes!

I was surprised by the frequency of status changes on FB to let the world know who you are going out with. Or if you are suddenly single. Or (my favorite) “it’s complicated.” Really? Your 14–what could be so complicated?

Then I came across this video the other day and I think it is a joke. I mean it has to be a joke, right? It can’t be serious…can it? When I was in middle school and listening to New Kids on The Block (NKTOB), did my mother think that was a joke?

Yeak, ok, probably.

So here I am feeling old and out of touch on one hand. And, on the other hand, desperately hoping none of my adorable sons grows into a teenager with a spiked, gelled, shellacked hairdo like these guys.

(Also, I think I was in a dance performance at summer camp in 1986 with the same choreography.)

Check it out and then tell me..is it a joke? Or am I just freakin’ old?
